Michigan Flashback
Unfriendly's parents visited us in either 2003 or 2004 when we were living in the ghetto fabulous Huron View Apartments. I remember that Unfriendly's mom really wanted to see a Michigan lighthouse. I remember hunting for the closest lighthouse to us. Sadly, at the moment, I can't remember which one it was or what lake this is.

I do remember that we went to Zingerman's* before heading out to get lunch, it took maybe 40 minutes to an hour and that there was a park nearby where we ate our wonderful sammiches. It was also pretty chilly, but nice in bluish grey Michigan way.

UPDATE: The lighthouse is the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron, MI. The bridge you see behind the lighthouse is the Blue Water Bridge. The lake is Lake Huron. The park I mentioned is Pine Grove Park.

Now I can go to sleep :)

*I would seriously kill for a T.L.B.B.L.T right now

I rescheduled my GRE for 4 weeks after my original date. This weekend I was stuck in the land of the CAT and boy do I hate the CAT.

My theory is that with more time looking at the stuff on the CAT as opposed to looking at a book, I'll get used to seeing questions on a screen. Right now I tend to panic and say, "Fuck it, this answer looks good"

This is NOT a good strategy.

That is all

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
I'll be taking the GRE in ten days. I've been brushing up how to take the stupid test and the math section for the past couple of weeks. Mistake number one was tolerating the Kaplan GMAT, GRE, LSAT 2006 platinum edition for as long as I did.

It's a very annoyingly constucted piece of software. The menu for what to select is all cartoony and anytime you take any of the brush up sections, a sound plays for whether or not the answer is right or wrong. So, while you're in the studying groove, you'll either hear a bunch of folks yelling "Yay! All right!" or a pleasant ding for selecting the correct answer. If you pick the wrong answer. you get a guy saying "D'oh" or an error buzzer sound.

I did pick up some test taking strategies and an idea of what my raw values are to start with...well..at least for verbal. I saw the math section before I knew any of the strategies so my logic was a la blonde surfer dude from Summer School - "The answer is always C! The answer is always C!"

I saw that math and my head sort of got swimmy b/c "Gee-I'm-A-Tree" and Algebra one were a long, long time ago. The fractions and percentage problems were fine but apparently I was doing way too much calculation.

The sample tests for math are ok, but they don't give you the score based on what the GRE would have given you. I'm guessing it's because they're non adaptive tests and more meant as practice.

I did pick up the Princeton Review's "Cracking the GRE" 2007 edition and it has been cracking me up. This is from section 9, The Geography of the Math Section

The Math section of the GRE mostly test how much you remember from the math courses you took in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade. Why is a passing knowledge of eight grade algebra important for a futre Ph.D. in English literature? Don't ask us. Apparently ETS thinks there's a connection.
It's nice to have a review book that actually has some humour and sarcasm thrown in it. It also has more strategy tips than the Kaplan software I originally purchased.

Oh, and for those of you who don't remember the mnemonic that is my subject line, it's for remembering the order of operations, which is something I can't forget because it was hammered into my skull long, long ago.

Parentheses Exponents Multiplcation Division Addition Subtraction

You many now return to your not so nerdy life while I get back to scratch paper, radii, angles and vertices.

New with 75 % less hair and 100% more beer
  • I have chopped my hair off. It was mid back when wet...about to my shoulder blades when dry (curly hair does that curly haired thing). Now it touches the nape of my neck when dry. I might post a picture eventually. It had to be done. I was rockin' the crazy homeless lady hair look what with the split ends and general frizzitude
  • I got four new tires. The tread on my tires was worn past the recommended number or whatever. I also have new oil in my car and about $400 less in my pocket.
  • Alpharetta has a local 5 Seasons brewery! This place is excellent. The food is organic and the beer is brewed right there. Nothing like killer food and killer beer. Unfriendly and I dined there kinda late on Friday since work has been aggravating / long for both of us.

This post was brought to you by Procrastination. Whenever Glitzy has to do something...like write a letter of recommendation for her ol' pal Cedric, she PROCRASINATES.

The letter is composed and it is WAY better than this one.

Because I am Overwhelmed and Miserable
... a little levity.

Allow me to introduce you to my M&M alter ego, Senorita Sparkles Con Carne.

Here she has hijacked the TARDIS, given it a paint job and taken it on a spin to a wonderful mountainous region either in 1997 or 2017 or sometime...we never can quite tell.

Knit In! And a Friday Update!
One of Unfriendly's co-worker buddies invited him to a Super Bowl party on Sunday. I'll be attending with knit bag in tow to participate in a Knit In organized by DIY Network's Vickie Howell. Super Bowl Sunday? Super Knit Sunday!

The charity, Warm Up America, is actually based near FormerBlondieā„¢'s neck of the woods. I'm a slow knitter so we'll see how many knitted 7"x9" rectangles I actually knit up.

Speaking of knitting, this is how far I've gotten with my One Baaad Poncho attempt

Of course...this may be why I've only gotten so far. I often have "help" when I break out the knitting.

Pooky is doing much better. His shaved areas from the ultra sound and i.v. are growing back very slowly though. Here he is demonstrating how well he fits in the puzzle box

Pay no attention to my bald leg

It makes my paw look ginormous. The shame!

Pumpkin often does not realize that the fluffy orange toy is Pooky's tail

I've been sick the past couple of days and home from work. We actually had a winter weather warning from 3am til 3pm today. I looked out the balcony this morning and actually saw ice on the roof tops. Behold! The horror! Ice should be form anywhere in Fulton county.

I took Pooky for his follow up bloodwork check up at noon and by then, this was all gone.

No ice in the forecast tomorrow. Though, part of me would love it because here snow = shutdown everything whereas in MI snow = life from October (possibly) til April (yuck. snow on Easter).
